On May 3, 2008, more than 150 employees of Comcast, along with family members, spent their Saturday volunteering at Target Hunger as part of the first annual Comcast Cares Day in Houston. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to work in the Langston Community Garden, stock the shelves of the pantry at the Langston Family Life Center, and distribute groceries at an informational/educational food fair.
Since 2001, more than 30,000 Comcast employees and their families in 34 states and the District of Columbia have come together as part of one of the largest single-day corporate volunteer events in the United States. Each year employees and their families donate more than 180,000 volunteer hours of service, or the equivalent of more than 86 person-years of community service, in one day.
In addition to being selected as one of 10 local nonprofits to participate in the company-wide service day, Target Hunger was also one of two sites to receive a special executive tour and visit by Brian Roberts, CEO of Comcast and Tony Speller, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Houston Region.
“Comcast is proud to be an active member of the Houston community, and Comcast Cares Day embodies our commitment to making a difference in the communities we serve,” said Speller. “There is nothing more rewarding than giving back, and I’m proud of the 1,700 local Comcast volunteers for donating their time and talents to help improve their neighborhoods.”
After a speech by U.S. Congressman Gene Green, Speller presented Clara Cooper, Executive Director of Target Hunger, with a check for $25,000.
