- Hungry families report they often must choose between paying for food or paying for another necessity. The trade off decisions that a hungry family or individual often make are outlined below:
- Food vs. utilities - 50 %
- Food vs. rent or mortgage - 43%
- Food vs. medicine or medical care - 33%

According to the 2008 Community Assessment by the United Way of Houston, the following information was provided:
- Approximately 40% of people in the Houston area are worried about buying groceries; more than half have trouble buying groceries each month.
- One in three families are having trouble buying
groceries each month.
