are hungry in Houston.
- Of the 153,000 different people who receive
food assistance each week from pantries, approximately 47% of
those people are children.
- Each year, 865,000 need assistance with food
in Houston and throughout southeast Texas.
- Approximately 33.7% of Houstonians lack money
for groceries at least once per month.
- The hunger relief system in Houston is approximately
6 million pounds short of what is needed each year.
- Hungry families report they often must choose
between paying for food or paying for another necessity. The
trade off decisions that a hungry family or individual often make
are outlined below:

conducted on behalf of Feeding America by Mathematica Policy Research,
Inc.
According to the 2008 Community
Assessment by the United Way of Houston, the following information
was provided:
- Of those facing challenges providing food for their
households, more than half (59%) had difficulty as often as once a month.
- One in four Houstonians surveyed had troubled buying groceires
at least once a month.
- Help With obtaining food was one of the top calls for
assistance on the 2-1-1 Helpline.
